But, taking them down and throwing them away felt even more lame so I decided to take mine off and make them into a darn door!

Here’s what we started with:
Once I took the doors down I moved them to my woodshop and took off the hardware. Using my domino I joined the two doors together and glued them up.
After letting the glue dry I started with out lining the edge of the door with 1×3 wood and added a piece of 1×3 exactly in the middle. The I painted behind the door with the final color I wanted the door to be.
After painting the inside of the door on both sides I started with nailing down my pattern. I wanted to do a herringbone with a shiplap feel so each piece had a nickel gap in between them.
Once that was done I filled all the nail holes, did a minor sanding to get rid of the excess wood filler, caulked to ends of the board where the original door and the new wood meet, and sprayed both sides with my Wagner Flexio. BOTH sides got a pattern, so don’t forget when buying your 1×3 to get enough for both sides of your door.
While the door was drying I installed the barn door hanging hardware making sure to include an additional spacer because this is now wider than a standard door from the wood we added to both sides. You can purchase the barn door spacers HERE.
