Looking for a cute modern coffee table you can build in a weekend? Then this is it!
I built this cutie for Season 12 of The Builders Challenge and with the FREE plans available here, you can build it to!
The plans call for a whole 48″x48″ sheet of plywood that is 3/4″ thick. I went with a maple plywood because this is going to be the top of the coffee table. However, because wood is a little pricey right now I decided to head to my local lumber yard and purchase a half sheet of maple for $34 and then a half sheet of garbage plywood for $23 to save on cost. (the cheaper is getting covered up by the maple!)
After I brought it home I cut it into 1×5 pieces with my Kreg Jig ACS.
Once I cut them into 1×5 pieces I glued them up using an alternating pattern and cut it into a circle with my Milescraft Circle Jig and a plunge router.
After I cut the circle I did 1 3/4″ maple edge banding around the entire circle to cover the plywood.
I don’t have a dado stack for my table saw, so I opted for repeat passes until I had my width and depth for the two pieces into a half lap making an X. DO GLUE these together YET.
Using the template in the plans I drew out my legs and used my miter and my ACS to cut four identical legs.
I assembled the legs in two pieces and then glued the two pieces together. Once you’ve glued all the legs together, use a forstner to create your drill holes to attach the base to the top.
Lastly I sprayed three coats of water based varathane in satin with my Wagner Flexio.
This is the perfect project for the Novice builder! If you don’t have a domino you can do pocket holes. It’s minimal effort with a maximum outcome. I love how darling it looks in our music room.
